Boomerang voice (VOIP) modes: Enabled, One-way, Meeting bot and Disabled
The Enable VOIP yes/no option on Boomerang games has been replaced by a VOIP mode with four choices. The new options let a team talk on their own conferencing call while the AI companion still takes part. You will find the setting on each game's management page: open the session, choose the Games tab and click Edit on a game, then look under Game settings.
The four modes
- Enabled (default) - normal in-game voice chat. Players and the AI companion all talk inside Boomerang. This is the right choice for headset sessions and for most desktop sessions.
- One-way (AI only - team talks on Teams/Zoom) - the team talks to each other on their own Teams or Zoom call. The in-game microphone is used only to speak to the AI companion, and everyone hears the companion's replies in-game. Players do not hear each other through Boomerang, and private channels and broadcasts are switched off. All players should use headphones.
- Meeting bot (AI joins the Teams/Zoom call) - there is no voice in the game at all. Instead, the AI companion joins the team's Teams, Zoom or Google Meet call as a participant. See Using the Meeting bot.
- Disabled - no voice chat in the game.
Meeting link
Below the VOIP mode is a Meeting link field for a Teams, Zoom or Google Meet invitation link. Pasting a link here automatically switches the VOIP mode to Meeting bot. If you deliberately choose a different mode while a link is stored, your choice is kept.
Remember to admit the companion from the call's lobby or waiting room once the game starts.
Rules and messages
- One-way and Meeting bot both need an AI companion persona on the session. If none is set you will see "One-way VOIP needs an AI companion persona on the session" or "The Meeting bot needs an AI companion persona on the session". Add one as described in Adding an AI companion to a Boomerang session.
- An Observer persona never hears voice, so it cannot be used with One-way or Meeting bot. The message reads "... is an observer persona and never hears voice; choose another persona or a different VOIP mode."
- Meeting bot needs a link: "The Meeting bot needs the call's link."
- Both fields lock once the game has started. Set them before you activate the game.
- Games created before this change show Enabled or Disabled according to their old setting. Nothing else changes for them.
Which mode should I use?
- Headsets in a room together, or a standard remote session: Enabled.
- Remote desktop session where the team is already on a Teams or Zoom call and you want the companion to be heard inside the game: One-way.
- Remote desktop session where you want the companion in the call itself, including a post-round debrief: Meeting bot.
- Sessions with no voice at all: Disabled.
Apollo games have a separate Disable voice chat (VoIP) tick box in their game settings; see Apollo Game Settings.
