Adding an AI companion to a Boomerang session

The AI companion is chosen at session level, so that every round in the session uses the same character. You can set it when you create the session or change it later from the session's Settings tab. For background on what the companion does, see The AI Companion for Boomerang - Overview.

When creating a session

  1. From the home page choose Create Session for the Boomerang application you want to use, as described in Creating and editing Sessions.
  2. Below the Application field you will see a new field, AI companion. It is only shown when the chosen application runs on Boomerang.
  3. Leave it as Off - no AI companion, or choose a persona from the list.
  4. Complete the rest of the form and click Create Application Session.

On an existing session

  1. Open the session and choose the Settings tab.
  2. Below the server field, choose a persona in the AI companion dropdown.
  3. Save the settings.

The change applies to every game in the session that has not started yet. Games that are in progress or finished keep whatever companion they had.

Reading the list

The dropdown is grouped by communication style:

  • On request - speaks only when directly addressed
  • Announcer - periodic announcements only
  • Teammate - joins the conversation freely
  • Observer - gameplay tips only; never hears player voice

Each entry shows the persona's name followed by a short description of how it behaves. If you are not sure which to pick, start with an On request persona.

Things to know

  • Each new game created in the session takes the session's companion setting automatically. You do not configure it per game.
  • The companion needs in-game voice or a meeting link to be heard. Check the game's VOIP setting; see Boomerang voice (VOIP) modes.
  • An Observer persona never hears players, so it cannot be used with the One-way or Meeting bot voice modes. The dashboard will tell you if you choose an incompatible combination.
  • If Jenson8 retires a persona you have already chosen, it stays available on that session so your settings are never changed without you knowing. New sessions will not offer it.
  • Only Boomerang sessions have this option. Apollo sessions do not show the field.
